I am going to take on the restraining order law issue. I will use my voice and the written word to help create legislation for reform. I am tired of myself being held hostage by it and the lethargy of our local government and legal sources to help make it more equal! I want to see the END of restraining order abuse! I will use my story and the stories of others as my plea and go to the State Legislature with this situation! I have been abused too much, for too long and instead of succumbing to it and dying, I want to fight!
There needs to be major restraining order reform. It is too often being used as a weapon (as in my case) and not for its intended purpose. I truly want to make it an important issue. Too many innocent people/families are harmed by its abuse. Attorneys are culpable, because many would rather offer it as a very cruel, quick, advantageous and lazy, solution to a sad problem and can only make a bad situation worse. Maybe it took my getting a false restraining order myself to understand the frustration and sheer terror they can bring to an innocent victim. It is more than frustrating and humiliating, it makes you feel like scum and beneath any other person in society. It can cause otherwise mild, caring people feel suicidal and angry because of the stigma it brings and the loss sustained. It affects your own self-esteem, you hate yourself for no good reason. You feel so helpless that all you can do is look up at night to the heavens and beg for a miracle. I had judges behave toward me as if they would have thought Jeffery Dahmer a much more prefered defendant to me and treated him much more compassionately too. It has been jaw dropping the terror and abuse I have sustained!
This is a shameful part of US law, and it needs to be seriously reformed! I am going to learn what I need to do to seek that reform! I will speak out on this travesty until it is changed!
And yes, I want to shine a light on my own situation as well, because it has become WAY beyond abusive; it has been an act of home grown terrorism!
Sincerely,
Cheryl Petrovich
